Nano Hydroxyapatite vs Non-Nano Hydroxyapatite for Oral Care Formulation

A statement such as “20 nm” is not a complete product classification.

  • whether the number comes from imaging or crystallite calculation;

What Does Non-Nano Hydroxyapatite Mean?

Non-nano hydroxyapatite is generally presented as a material that does not fall within the applicable nano classification used for the target market or project.

However, the claim still requires technical support.

A supplier should not classify a product as non-nano only because:

  • the powder appears coarse;
  • its average particle size is reported in micrometres;
  • its laser-diffraction D50 is above 1 µm;
  • larger clusters are visible in an image;
  • the commercial name includes “micro.”

A micrometre-scale distribution may describe larger particles or agglomerates without fully describing the smallest structures present in the material.

A useful non-nano assessment should therefore identify:

  • the classification basis used;
  • the relevant market or customer definition;
  • the supporting particle information;
  • the analytical methods applied;
  • whether the declaration applies to the supplied commercial grade;

The commercial statement “non-nano” should be treated as a claim requiring evidence, not as a self-verifying product name.

Does Microcrystalline Hydroxyapatite Mean Non-Nano?

Not automatically.

This is one of the most important distinctions in hydroxyapatite sourcing.

The term microcrystalline hydroxyapatite may refer to:

  • crystalline structure;

  • larger microclusters;

  5. Is the material classified as non-nano for the intended market?

Without these answers, microcrystalline should be treated as a commercial or technical description rather than an automatic synonym for non-nano.
